Without seeking recognition, notice, or fanfare, a 1961 SDSU engineering physics alum shared a gift through his estate to support Jackrabbits pursuing the field to which he devoted his life. Originally from Webster, South Dakota, Elton D. Schafer’s generosity created a $1.4 million scholarship endowment. Schafer passed away January 5, 2019.
Based on Schafer’s own experience and major at SDSU, the scholarship endowment provides four-year renewable scholarships to benefit students from South Dakota majoring in physics, chemistry, and computer science. The Elton D. Schafer Endowed Scholarship is the fifth largest ever established at SDSU.
With Schafer’s gift, the Office of Admissions will utilize critical resources to recruit top students in the preferred majors. Schafer’s generosity enables qualifying students who are following in his footsteps to pursue their education with a significant financial burden lifted from their shoulders. Both current and future Jackrabbits may receive support from the scholarship as it solidifies the university’s competitive edge in recruiting and retaining the state’s best and brightest.
Schafer spent much of his career in the aerospace industry, including time as a senior scientist at Hughes Aircraft. He eventually retired in southern California. This estate gift, which will greatly impact student lives, is his first and only gift to his alma mater.
Schafer’s experience as an undergraduate not only secured his successful career and lifelong trajectory in scientific fields, but also created fond memories that later motivated him to give back to the university and position students like him for future success.
